Data shows small businesses will embrace the cloud, UC in 2014

Small business IT leaders should consider investing in Microsoft training, as there is a good chance their enterprises will be integrating some of the tech giant's products into their operations. According to data from j2 Global, 2014 could be a watershed year for startups in terms of technology adoption. 

The source found that 88 percent of startups are planning to phase out at least one legacy technology next year. This shows that entrepreneurs are starting to view cutting edge tools such as cloud computing and mobile software as a viable driver for growth. As the costs associated with these technologies continue to fall, it's no surprise that small business leaders are ramping up their tech procurement efforts. 

One of the most significant trends that will emerge in 2014 is the use of cloud platforms among startups. The source noted that 60 percent of respondents said their firms expect to save money by using cloud systems next year. Additionally, 23 percent plan to put VoIP or other virtual telephony systems in place, while 36 percent will leverage remote work policies for staff members. 

These trends point to a potential boom in the cloud and unified communications (UC) markets, two technologies that are often associated with remote network access and cost savings. 

"The unrelenting trend toward the digital office continues for SMBs across every industry," said Mike Pugh, vice president of marketing at j2 Global. "The overall message from the survey is that the cloud just makes smart business sense for the SMB."

According to Microsoft, work-from-home strategies are becoming more popular among startups. The source noted that 93 percent of small business have employees working from remote locations

For this reason, today's startups are finding it necessary to leverage cutting-edge solutions to ensure their remote employees remain connected to the office.

A number of Microsoft software products such as SharePoint can make the transition to remote access easier for small companies. This program is one of the most used collaborative tools on the market, likely because it is easy to integrate with other software. SharePoint sites and files can be accessed on a number of other Microsoft programs, making it a convenient launching pad for any firm starting off on their cloud or mobile work journey. 

To ready their organizations for these new workplace technologies, executives should consider investing in SharePoint training. It will allow enterprises to quickly embrace the trends that have proven to increase profits for many startups.
